Ford has gone above and beyond for sustainability with its current model year. In addition to creating a closed-loop aluminum recycling system at its Dearborn Truck Plant, which produces its new 2016 Ford F-150s, Ford announced today that it is changing how it produces plastic and foam parts for its vehicles.
While Ford currently uses many recycled and sustainable materials in its vehicles, including recycled denim, plastic bottles, and coconut fibers, it's going further than many thought possible, reclaiming carbon emissions from the atmosphere to create new, usable plastics. By distilling CO2 in the atmosphere into something called CO2-based polyols, Ford can create plastics that pass muster for under-the-hood applications as well as comfortable foam for its seating.
Using this new sustainability process, Ford hopes to save almost 600 million pounds of petroleum use per year. This is just one more way Ford is driving industry sustainability practices forward, and engineering the next generation of eco-friendly vehicles.
